'An editorial on Thursday about the shooting of Representative Steve Scalise incorrectly stated that a link existed between political rhetoric and the 2011 shooting of Representative Gabby Giffords. 'The editorial also incorrectly described a map distributed by a political action committee before that shooting.
It depicted electoral districts, not individual Democratic lawmakers, beneath stylized cross hairs,' the correction read. Her lawyers said the newspaper ought to have apologized to her after publishing its correction and called the editorial 'fabricated'.
The editorial was published by the newspaper on June 14 in the wake of a shooting at a Republican baseball practice which was carried out by Democrat James T. It explored whether political incitement was to blame for the shooting and, to illustrate the point, included reference to the 2011 shooting of Giffords by gunman Jared Lee Loughner and a campaign ad issued by Palin in the months beforehand which singled out Giffords on a map.
Palin, 53, claims it defamed her by and believes the newspaper owes her an apology.
